Abstract

After a short period of time after the success of the revolution of July 14,1958 AD in Iraq in overthrowing the monarchy and transforming the government in Iraq into a republic, signs of disagreements began between the parties, political forces, and the Free Officers, because the nationalist forces were led by Abdul Salam Arif.

Calls for unity with the United Arab Republic, in return. Try. The Communist Party, which was opposed to the idea of unity, proposed the idea of cooperation with the United Arab Republic in the economic, cultural, and scientific fields instead of political and military unity.

This conflict gradually turned into an armed conflict, and this encouraged Colonel Abdul Wahab Al-Shawaf to launch a movement in Mosul on March 8, 1958 AD, known as the Al-Shawaf Revolution. The reason for choosing Mosul as the starting point for the revolution was the presence of most officers with nationalist tendencies.

Leader Abdul Karim Qasim and the communists were able to eliminate the uprising after the killing of its leader, Abdul Wahab Al-Shawaf. They imposed their influence on Mosul, established a local authority, and established courts that issued death sentences. The prisons and detention centers were filled with hundreds of nationalist elements.
